Maintaining a Laser Printer
Keep in mind that before you perform any kind of
maintenance on your laser printer you should always read your product’s
warranty and the manufacturer’s recommendations that came with your
printer when you first bought it. This is to ensure that you do not do
anything while
cleaning or maintaining your laser printer to void its
warranty.
The main thing that you need to avoid is the particles of toner that can fly through the air when you clean your computer. These particles can suspend in the air and they are notoriously carcinogenic. They can cause respiratory problems as well as lung cancer and skin cancer. This is why it is very important not to get these particles on your skin or in your lungs. Take care to have air cleaners and air conditioners going in your office while cleaning your laser printer. It also helps to open all windows and also maybe wear a mask with a HEPA filter (especially if you notice that the interior of the printer is particularly dusty.
It is also essential that you shut your laser printer off before you attempt to clean it. This is because the fuser roller gets red hot (200 degrees Celsius) and can cause serious burns if you touch it.
The best things to clean your laser printer are a toner cloth, cotton swabs, a paintbrush and isopropyl alcohol (99% solution). Also make sure you wear latex gloves to protect your hands when you clean your laser printer. If toner does get on your hands during laser printer maintenance then make sure you wash it off with cold water or else the toner will seep into your skin’s pores.
You can also buy a little contraption called a
toner vacuum. It is made by 3M and looks like a little black box. It is
made specifically for cleaning the toxic dust particles from toner out
of your laser printer.
